Seriously, Hercules is like that fast kid in class who would always challenge everybody to a race at recess. Good to know the Olympics were founded in the spirit of fair competition. A freaking Demigod, son of Zeus, famous for his strength, won every game at the first Olympic games, that he started. I mean, just think about this: not only was he the creator of the games, but he was the first gold medalist.in everything. Well the true story is that Hercules was a dick. Seriously, how the hell do you mistake a wolf for your own granny?ĭisney’s Hercules only made me want to find out more about Greek Mythology and culture. At the ripe old age of.however old I was when i watched this movie, like 5, I already knew Cinderella’s step sisters should have had their ankles chopped off trying to fit their hobbit feet into the slipper and that there was no good samaritan woodsman to save Little Red Dipshit.

I loved that movie when I was little, and thought it was so cool that some ancient religion was basically the worship of comic book super heroes who had super strength, flight powered sandals, and the ability to throw freaking lightning bolts as spears! Too. Now I have to say, Hercules was quite possibly the initial impetus behind my pursuit of Classics. That’s right, probably the most famous hero of all time is cited as the founder of the Olympics. But it’s the idea behind it that counts.Īnother thing you may or may not know, is that according to Myth, the Olympics were supposedly started by none other than Heracles (Greek spelling of the more well known Romanization of Hercules). Fun fact: “Nike” is actually the ancient, winged, Greek goddess of Victory (chances are that the word “Nike” just meant victory in Greek and she was later personified).īut, much like today, I mean war doesn’t stop for no ball game. They were supposed to be a time when everybody dropped their spears and helmets, and instead picked up their disuses and Nike shoes to compete in athletic competitions.
I’m also a Classics major, and as you probably know, the Olympics stem from the classical world.
I’m kinda all for Globalization and I believe the Olympics, or at least the ideals behind them, are basically a positive influence on the world. I don’t watch sports, almost could not care less for things like Football or Basketball, but the Olympics are amazing. Then I remembered the Olympics start today! Watching the opening ceremonies as I write this.
